| Company Car Mileage - Advice Please [message #373746] |

Hi
If I have a company car I understand that I am not allowed to claim as
business miles the journey to and from my normal place of work.
I always believed that if I go from my home to another location other
than that where my office is I could claim the full journey mileage as
business miles.
However, someone has now doubted that and says that if I go from my
home to a different location and back, I have to deduct from my
business mileage claim the amount of miles that it takes to get to my
office and back.
Is this true? (Providing I have explained myself properly!)
Thanks for your help.

These are the rules as I understand them yes.
(The converse is that someone who doesn't normally
commute by car, is allowed to claim the full mileage)

Correct.

Correct, as far as the IR are concerned (your company's policy may be different - but
if it is you can get tax relief).
IIRC there are execptions like if the other location is very close to your usual
place of work, eg an office in the same town.

You might do for your expense claim - that'll depend on your company's expenses
policy. But as far as the IR are concerned, the full journey is business mileage and
if your company don't pay it in full, claim tax relief on the difference.

My understanding is that you can claim from home to another location only if
the mileage is less than from your office to that place. If it is further
from home to the alternative location you have to deduct the home to work
mileage or the difference between the home to other location and office to
other location, whichever is less.

"Different location" isn't enough. Start here:

Having looked this up
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32230.htm
I see that Andy is right.
I am sure that it didn't use to be like this - Oh well!
(And I an absolutely certain that the old web site containing
eveything in a flat format was a million times easier to use
that this 'modern' linked thing that they now have, where finding
a proper top level menu is next to impossible.)

I'm pretty sure it's been like this for at least 20 years, I've always claimed
expenses on this basis.
The logic is that many people have a season ticket or share lifts to their usual
place of work. For such people the full journey is additional expense, not just the
additional mileage over and above their usual commute.
