Am I able to find out how many shares I had in Deutsche Telecom shares
when they first went public in Germany in 1997-1998 (? about exact
date).
Is there a specific register in Germany, that is obliged to disclose
information to a former owner?
I am living in New Zealand - the german embassy and the bank in
germany, where the shares were originally purchased, are quite
unhelpful in this matter - I hope maybe someone here has an idea in
this matter?

In general ther is no obligation to register share owners at all.
And so their is no central register.
If a company has registered shares, it has its own register (or has
outsourced the service to a registering service).

There is a legal fashion named "Datenschutz", which means data protection
and claims to protect people against abuse with their personal data, but
often hinders people from handling their own information as they like.
In particular, often the involved institutions are forced to forget any
information as soon as they do need it any more.
