International transfer [message #384775] Mi, 03 Mai 2006 17:49
cyberscout
I'm off to a holiday house in Poland this summer. The owner wants a 48
euro deposit, yet my bank is charging =A315 for making a bank transfer.
The woman doesn't accept cards.

Any better/cheaper way of transferring the money.

I send US Dollars to my grandson in America for his birthday.

I was in the Post Office the other day when a woman was sending a 15"
square parcel to Australia, and it was costing her £50+.

I told her to buy money and send that, but she said it was something
they don't have in Oz.... (The Ashes)? ;-)

Seconded. IIRC you need "international signed for". Works for us.

I thought international signed for was the same as recorded delivery.
Ie you won't get compensated for it going missing.

I only used international signed once, it took 2 1/2 weeks to get a letter
to Texas from the UK, which was about a week longer than ordinary letters I
have sent. And the supposed status tracking didnt work at all (you are meant
to be able to see where it is at each stage but once it got to the US that
was it). I wouldnt bother paying the extra for that, e50 is only about £30
and I think you can get insurance for up to £30 anyway on standard post.

It's now £32.00 (100 * 1st Class post) but cash is not covered anyway.

Did you try to track it on the US Postal Service web site? That
usually works for items I send.

Yep, according to that it was always in LA, and remained there for weeks
even after it had been delivered!

OK cheers for that didnt realise that. Even so well worth taking the chance
I'd have thought. Or for the really paranoid, I wonder if fedexing it
wouldnt be a similar price as the £18 bank xfer?
