I have a Graduate Barclaycard, which I just called up to try to cancel,
since I have a Nationwide Credit Card (
http://nationwide.co.uk/creditcard/ClassicCard/default.htm ) which
offers commission-free use abroad, which is useful since I live in
Holland most of the time.
But when I called to cancel, the woman told me that they probably did
charge me in some 'hidden' way. Barclaycard at least make these
charges explicit. She then upgraded me to a Platinum Barclaycard.
Is she right?

No, she's bullshitting.
AIUI Nationwide pass on the VISA charge, but don't add any charge of their own.
Barclaycard, like nearly every other card, rips you off with a fee of around 2.75%,
because they think most customers are too thick to notice a charge hidden in the
exchange rate. Stick with Nationwide.
If you withdraw cash, it'd be better to open a flex account, as Nationwide keep
increasing their cash advance charges on the credit card.

Cheers Andy. Just closed the Barclaycard. It wasn't easy, but I
talked them around to it :)
