What is going on, egg.com seem to be having some pretty serious problems. i
have been trying to use their site for 3 days and now get this
"Unfortunately, our site is currently unavailable and we are temporarily
unable to provide account information over the telephone.
We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you and rest assured,
we're working flat out to fix this, though it's unlikely to be completed
today.
We'll update you right here as soon as we can on Sunday morning.
Thank you."

I haven't had any problems with egg at all. This morning is the first time
in I don't know how long I haven't been able to log in. The most common
problem is that after logging in not all of my external accounts can be
displayed, and it's normally Virgin that can't display.

Oh come on, it's not all bad:
"The good news is that you can still apply for an Egg Card online now."
It does sound quite serious. I could understand that the website could
have a problem through no fault of Egg themselves e.g. DDoS attack, but
to have a problem with the phones as well is not good, unless they just
don't work on Sundays of course?

I'm, sure they can take calls. What they can't do is access account
details (since the computer/database/program is broken). Yes, it's
serious .. but only for those who didn't notice that Egg were a bunch of
clowns and give up on them long ago. I gave up after about a year, when
I discovered they couldn't even calculate my interest correctly (until I
showed them how it is done).

Perhaps their phone staff just access the website on behalf of the
customer, instead of having a different route straight in to the
database. That way, if the website is broken, the phone staff are
just as excluded as customers who go straight to the website.
Alternatively, the database itself could be broken.
Alternatively, someone may have dug up the road and cut the comms
cable which carries both phone and Internet traffic into the
operations centre.

I haven't tried by phone but I have been on egg.com within 3 days because I
transfered some money on Friday when I was at work.

I found the site was down yesterday afternoon. Now (Sunday 15:15 hrs
BST) the site seems to be working again.

Yeh the site seems to be up, but the Money manager still doesn't seem
to be able to show external accounts :(
Sort it out Egg!

I had no problems with my external accounts last night. Virgin was slow at
displaying in Money Manager but it always is.

If that's the case, then for an organisation for whom
telecommunications is critical to its business they should have
designed their network more professionally. They should have had
sufficient diversity built into their external links such that any
single point of failure would not bring access to their systems down
completely.
