Better jobs for over 50s

There a little contradiction here. You say better jobs for the over 50's but
the salary you quote is one for a first job, fresh out of University (or
what passes for one, nowadays)

Many over 50s might be prepared to 'give back'; some
of what they have earnt in the rest of their lives by taking
a lower paid job for a charity for their final few working
years.

I suppose the biggest problem would be makeing sure
that you pension was based upon previous earnings
and not current ones.

Since A day there is no longer an Inland Revenue requirement to limit
pensions to a proportion of final salary.

steady... how many graduates do you know that get 29k+ in their first year
of the their new job? Maybe at the very large firms and in certain jobs but
overall those people are in the minority... the average is between 18-22k.
(18k in my own area IIRC)

Lowest I know of is £18K for a Top 4 accountancy firm, based in NW England.
The same job but in London is £22K. Highest I know is £38K in London for an
investment bank.

Indeed, Investment bankers get paid a shitload when you add on their
bonuses.

As you mentioned even top 4 staff wont hit 28k in their first year as
accountants. My friend works for PwC and i think his wage is around 22 or so
(not more but probably less) - as you say 22k for London I am feeling
probably about 20k.

Any idea how quickly the salary increases over the eyars with larger firms
(and even smaller firms) in general?

Here's a survey for corporate financiers -
http://news.efinancialcareers.co.uk/SALARY_SURVEY_ITEM/newsI temId-5864

Starting salaries are normally pegged quite high in order to attract the
best talent, as many graduating are immediately attracted to the firms
offering higher salaries. This therefore leads to a slow increase initially.
You have to remember too that graduates enter training programmes that cost
thousands and bring little business, if any, to the firm.

I was in a fortunate situation where I had a private bank, an accountancy
firm and two investment banks offering me graduate jobs. The decision was
based on several other factors than remuneration alone.
