Trading Oil without Trading Oil

Trading Oil without Trading Oil

am 10.03.2006 16:21:53 von RalphSE

Hi All,

I am interested to know if there is an ETF or something that is about
as close as one can get to trading oil, the commodity without actually
trading oil, the commodity as in a futures contract??

OIH comes to mind but it is mostly oil services and drillers so is not
quite the same, although I would imagine they often move in tandem.

Would appreciate any help with this.

Thanks!
Ralph

Thanks Ephraim,

XLE is described as "The fund invests in energy companies that
primarily develop and produce crude oil and natural gas, and provide
drilling and other energy-related services."

So since this also includes natural gas, I wonder if OIH would be a
better fit than XLE?

Regards,
Ralph

Does it mean anything to you: "When the paddy wagon comes
it takes the good girls as well as the bad girls."

Not sure what you are implying, but if it's that XLE and OIH move in
tandem with the price of crude I have certainly observed that NOT to be
the case on more than one occasion although it is for the most part the
case...I would appreciate it if anyone else has a serious answer to my
question

Well you're out of luck in the US..... but London has an Oil ETF if you can
trade on that exchange.

LSE: OSL

it seems someone applied for one in the US...but it's not open yet.

Lobby hard for that US one !

This is about 1 1/2 yrs. old, FWIW:

Excerpt:
Although most of XLE's component stocks are involved heavily in the
oil patch, oil prices are not highly correlated with XLE (near 10%).
Recently, oil has appeared to show a leading relationship to XLE. That
is, turns in the price of oil have preceded turns in the price of XLE.
For example, oil hit a new high in mid-August and has fallen fairly
sharply since then. However, XLE made a new high more than two weeks
after that.
