In both contests, neither arne-slow will be used.... too much trouble to
follow both (I dislike have to do the manual computations, and vacations
make it difficult to get necessary updates), and the slow and fast I'm using
are now 18 and 26 s/y so it probably would not make a lot of difference.
I'll be tracking only one version in each contest and will remove the slow
portfolio at some future date...

Hats off to Arne.
By my count this is the third contest. What will be interesting at
year-end will be the folks who beat the market (VFINX) in every year.

Arne is doing great, but there's still 7 months to go. I think he's in the
groove though.

While I think it's more important to beat VFINX over your investing lifetime
than every year, it's still fun to beat it every year. Over the past 5 years
all you had to do to best VFINX/VTSMX is bury your money in the back yard. A
money market fund would have served you well.
The following are 5 year average annual returns:
Vanguard Prime Reserves +2.57%
VFINX -3.02%
VTSMX -2.07%
I like this one:
Tax-Managed Cap Apprec Fund, VMCAX -4.32%
Great job, no tax due on this one.

Hmmm... Mark was up to 112,000 a few weeks ago, but he is back down to
96,000 now. If you want steady mediocrity then stick with me! I don't
think I have been as much as 2% away from the index yet.

Mark has proven to be a loser year in and year out. He has lost big in each
of the contests and I don't think this year will be any different. He should
take up casino gambling I think he would lose less. To quote Mark: Some
people are slow learners, some are no learners. I put him in the second
group.
I'm ahead of the S&P500 (as you probably know) but not by that much. So far
I've had positive returns for the year to date.

Thank you. This week, I have friends on both sides of the fence, some think
up, some think down (me).... my high s/y signals are on a sell (those above
10 switches per year). Those with less than 10 s/y are still on a sell....
One will catch up with the other this week....
I still plan on being no. 1 or 2 at year's end.... I do not invest using
Mark's scheme...

If that was all you had to do, why didn't you list that as an option
when you posted your twelve funds you predicted would beat VFINX/VTSMX
five years ago?

This post is an A+ .
Chuckling here...

Personally I disagree. It ignores the fact that there are always funds that
are producing profits. I happen to like bear funds as one alternative,
though they are foreign territory to most. While any specific fund or index
might have lost ground since March, 2000, there were some knowledgeable
people who did extremely well finding those funds that increased in value.
To say that putting money in a mattress is an investing option shows some
ignorance of what investing means. Because the market is going down does not
mean there is no place to make money.
I've put a ytd chart in www.freewebs.com/timer-stuff that shows the result
of trading between otpix (otc bull) and sopix (otc bear).,,,,, The second
line at the bottom (solid red) is what otpix, the otc bull fund, did during
the period. The red/green line is the result of trading the signals.....
I only trade otc bull & otc bear... in some accounts, the vanilla version
( = otc) and more aggressive accts, factored x 2. So, my portfolio in its
entirety never contains more than 2 funds.

Because it was a joke, just like you are.
