Looking for some help managing my Thrift Savings Plan
Looking for some help managing my Thrift Savings Plan

Hello, I have a Thrift Savings Plan and would like to know of any good
web sites that can help me set up the percent contributions into each
of the 5-funds. The only web site I know is www.tsppilot.com. I've set
my TSP account for 10% in G, 10% in F, 27% in C, 26% in S, and 26% in
the I fund. I won't retire for another 23 years or so. If anyone knows
of some good web sites, or have subscribed to the service at
www.tsppilot.com please let me know.
Thanks,
joe

I think your allocation is fine. I don't think much of your choices but you
have to work with what you've got.
With 28 years to go I think I would change it just a little.
G 10%
F 10%
C 30%
S 15%
I 35%
You could even get by without G & F but they'll help to give you a smoother
ride and reduce risk.
I wouldn't pay TSP Pilot $150/year, that's for sure. has
plenty of information.

There's no reason you would know this, but the G Fund is actually
awesome. It's one of a kind. It's a super-safe Treasury fund with a
constant NAV...but its yield is more like that of intermediate
Treasurys, if not higher. Okay, if you absolutely don't want any fixed
income, it doesn't buy you anything, but otherwise.....

In that case I might skip F and put the 20% in G. Thanks, sounds better than
a money market fund.

The only reason to hold F, in my opinion, is if you see a strong
possibility that rates will drop substantially. That is, when bond
yields are high, F starts to make more sense. Otherwise, stick with G.
The G Fund buys special, one-day Treasurys available only to the TSP.
The government sets the yield of these things equal to the weighted
average of all outstanding Treasurys with maturities of four years or
longer.

Four free online allocation planners (which take things like age and risk
tolerance and spew out recommended allocations):
(Take the 49-question survey. At the end, it
will spew back at you recommended allocations, using the index funds it
sells. Just ignore the particular funds, and use the general
recommendations.)
(Faster than the above, but more
general, too.)
(This appears to be
identical to many others sites' tools. Fast but general.)
www.vanguard.com (Click on: "Go to Personal Investors... " ; "Planning &
Education" near top; "Retirement Planning"; "I'm already saving... "; "How
should I allocate my assets" on the right, middle; "I accept" at the
bottom.)
Googling for {portfolio allocator} turns up more, but I doubt they vary
much from the above.
If you have an account with Fidelity, I know one can log in and it has a
more detailed allocation tool. If you have an account elsewhere, it may
have an online allocation tool, too.
