Someone asked what happened to Skip.

This is just speculation, but Skip is a financial advisor and a big believer
in the S&P500 index funds.

My theory:
As the popularity of mutual funds exploded in the late 1990's Skip's
practice was doing very well. His client list was growing by leaps and
bounds. He put everyone into VFINX and their portfolios went nowhere. Five
or six years later people started closing their accounts and moving into
CD's at a local bank, Skip's client list was shrinking. In order to make
ends meet, Skip took a job bagging groceries at a local Harris Teeter
supermarket and has very little time for newgroups now.

Seriously, I used to enjoy his one-liners. Skip seems like a really good
guy.

I fell asleep in front of the tv yesterday afternoon at 5. Woke up at 7,
then went to bed at 8. Busy day yesterday, I was washing the house down.
That's a lot of work for an old guy.

When things are on my mind, like how to cut the back off my trailer (think
I'll start another freewebs site), I wake up thinking about all the options.
I have to have it done by this coming Friday, so I got up at 3, back to bed
at 4, finally up at 8 a.m..... now to get cutting.

This project is like the build last year in Sept, have a severe deadline, so
putting in long days, with lots of thinking. Chopped 6 inches off the top,
dropped the trailer 3", and extended it 16" for a galley at the back.... way
too much thinking involved.

-2% YTD VIVAX, which I tagged to sell too long ago to still be holding.
Diverse is good. But I'm wondering, midyear when I was holding 25
funds - how can it now be only 8.

Those VFINX holders did much better than most other investors, so unless he
tells them there is no risk, he doing OK. By the way Ed, which two or three
funds will do the BEST over the next couple of months? Will any of these
funds repeat in the next three months

and why?

You're betting that the fund managers of the funds you invest in have some
way to beat the market, something like "Breaking Vegas." EMH says no such
method exists.

You're hopeless.

Thank you, but did you think LETRX will do as well next period? How much
did you have invested in the fund? Its a 5 star fund.

I do not own LETRX and I never have. I have owned CEE in the past but do
not hold it currently.

BTW....

am 26.09.2005 16:51:54 von Ed

LETRX is in the European Stock category so the 5 star rating is pretty
meaningless.
When I look for a fund a 5 star historical rating isn't one of the criteria.
Don't ask what they are, I've already told you.

if you went to M* our some mutfund screener, put in high ranked/low risk
funds, you might think your well on the way to designing a world beater
portfolio----WRONG! if was that easy, everybody at M* would be rolling
in the dough. another piece of crap is the wonderful ValueLine ranking
system--go look at charts for the ValueLine funds.

Exactly right. I always look to see if some well regarded person manages a
fund just to see how his advice is working out. Paul Merriman comes to mind,
Eddie Brown, one of Lou's former elves, is another.

David Dreman is probably one of the better people in this area. Besides his
open end funds he has a CEF, Dreman Claymore Dividend & Income Fund (DCS).
It looks pretty good and trades at a discount of about 10%.
