What is an M-16?

The context I saw it in was an anyalist said "it would be better to
but an m-16 than gold.

Yeppers, the context was - if buying bullion such as gold and silver
coins was a wise move if one was worried about economic collapse and
the response was that you'd be better off stocking up on water, food
and buying a weapon than gold and silver.

As for the M-16, it's still the basic weapon for most of our military
and many other armies around the world. Although having spent 20
months in 'nam, I'd still prefer an M-14. M-16 are cute and carbinish,
but don't have any stopping nor knockdown power - and frankly, I've
always had doubts about their long distance accuracy. Give me an M-14
any day for accuracy at distance AND serious knock you on your ass
stopping power. Oh, and BTW, in addition to spending 20 months in 'nam
in the crotch, I went to sniper school and had to qualify at 500, 600
and 1000 meters.

Hi Ed,

No. They needed students for the week long division sniper school and I
was available and had qualified Expert in bootcamp . . . so rono got to
go. And it was freakin great!

One of the snipers that you're referring to was Gunny Carlos Hathcock.
He passed away a few years back and somewhere I've got his obit which
I'll have to find and post. It's at work, so I'll post it next week.
He was God's own sniper, however. The north vietnamese put a $10K
bounty in gold on his head. He had a confirmed kill and 1.5 miles. Now
THAT's a dinger. The north sent their best sniper after him and he set
out too. They stalked each other for weeks. Finally, one morning he
caught a brief reflective glint - sighted in on it and squeezed it off .
.. . and put one right down the scope of the NVA sniper - who was zeroing
in on him.
