I always find it entertaining when some communist British "news" paper
lectures America about its economy, as if the economy in the UK is
anything to brag about. I guess it was written before Friday's
economic reports which show robust economic growth despite the
Hurricanes. Perhaps you should read more reputable publications like
the WSJ rather than the "Independent".

The "cobbled-together tax system" is designed to provide incentives to
spend money in particular ways, like buying homes (by making the
mortgage deductable). There would be nothing worse for the housing
market than to "simplify" our tax system, which would almost certainly
reduce or eliminate the mortgage deduction; causing millions of people
to no longer be able to afford their homes.

Being clueless is a choice. Hopefully you'll come around eventually.
