As a preliminary set of rules for the competition, I propose the following,
for comment and modification if necessary. Only intending or probable
competitors should bother to reply as trolls are not invited!

1) Start with $100,000 or £100,000 or Euro100,000 cash as appropriate.

2) Invest in anything priced on Finance.Yahoo. i.e Funds, Stocks, ETFs or
whatever. Own any number of either, from one upwards or go into cash and
earn interest at a rate you declare. Include distributions and dividends.
Stocks have to have ex-div dates within the 2006 year but dividends paid
after the year ends may be included in the final value.

3) Pay costs as in real life. i.e Buy at offer price, sell at bid price plus
any commissions.

4) Go long or short with appropriate costs. If you buy on margin then pay
interest and fees.

5) Do deals as you would with your broker or fund company at current prices
and post them on the NG as soon as you have the numbers. Put them in as
Transactions in Finance.Yahoo as soon as possible.

6) Competitors will be assumed to be honest and should be largely
self-policing. There is no real money or glory to be had. If you cheat then
you cheat yourself as the learning experience will be distorted. While I
shall check most things I can't guarantee that you will not be cleverer or
more knowledgeable than me in various investment areas. If I query something
then I will expect you to justify it. If you can't then you are out, but I
don't expect this to happen.

7) The winner is the one with the highest number of local currency units at
the end.

8) As an alternative order of merit I will compare portfolios on how much
extra percentage they make above their main stock index, the S&P500 in the
US and the FTSE100 in the UK.

I will send a Yahoo ID and Password to competitors when I have them set up.

I'd like to join too. My portfolio will be mkusuma

thanks, David.

Do I need a password? Thanks for running this. TK did a great job, also.

Yes you need a Yahoo ID and Password. I will send these to all competitors
but make sure I have a working e-mail address for you all. You will be able
to start investing on Jan 3.

No thanks, I'll pass. I've got enough to do with my real stuff and the
contest I do play in.

Its a shame you're afraid to backup your BS. You remind me of a drunk
trucker.

I don't know any druck truckers. I do know a shithead that claims to belong
to MENSA.

There are several people that post here that participated in a contest that
I was involved with.
They all know I beat Vanguard500 AGAIN, I have no burning desire to prove
anything to you.
I came in 5th out of 7. Vanguard 500 would have come in at 6th but didn't do
half as well as I did
and until December I had a ton of cash. Cash earns nothing in our contest.

I think your contest could learn from that.
Those of you that use a broker in your contest should all use the same
broker.
We simplified that and instead use free trades. In case of a tie or two or
more really close
finishing numbers, we would then use commissions of $7 per trade to decide
the winner.
Because you elect to use different brokers some players hold an advantage
over others.
Because you count MM interest, some have an advantage over others. UK
interest rates are higher than US interest rates, for example.

You make all kinds of crazy claims, spend hours posting and monitoring this
NG, and spend hours "researching" investments, yet you will not even
participate in trivial contest. What else do have to do?

I make an effort on Christmas and Thanksgiving as well.
Not always successful though. Oh, and our anniversary, and her birthday too.
And Mother's Day. Hey, I have got to trim some of these.
