Investments like ETFs or closed-end funds?
Investments like ETFs or closed-end funds?

I like purchasing investments like closed-end mutual funds and ETFs because
they generally provide a very wide grouping of assets and I can buy and sell
them as I please.
In other words, I typically don't like buying individual stocks and thereby
making a bet on that particular company's business.
I would like to expand my range of potential investments.
What are other types of investments like mutual funds and ETFs? I was
thinking REITs is one. Where can I find a comprehensive list of REITs?
Perhaps some individual stocks are like this too in the sense that they are
basically huge conglomerates with a wide range of assets in different areas.
Any particular best/quick way to identify these?
Any other thoughts?
Thanks for any help.

Like Walmart WMT and Costco COST, Lowe's LOW and Home Depo EHD, or
Samsung SSGQF.PK? I'd go with a stock assets screener and break them
down.

Stock sorters such as those accessible via
(basic
screener) and www.morningstar.com will let you sort by
"REIT."
has information on individual REIT performance, including a
list of all REITs, for one's analysis.
I wouldn't call all REITs "conglomerates." Some are very
specialized. E.g. mortgage-based REITs. Cap size is very
small, generally speaking, for REITs, too.
Nor do I see REITs as a parallel to ETFs or mutual funds.
A long-term investor may be inclined to hold 10-20% of
his/her portfolio in REITs, as part of the allocation to
smooth out the bumps in the larger stock market (as roughly
measured by, say, the S&P 500). REITs will not grow in
principal as quickly as blue chip stocks. Nor do their
dividends increase in size as fast. This is because the law
for establishing a REIT requires that most of its earnings
(like 90%?) be distributed to shareholders. Hence it can't
reinvest earnings and 'grow the principal.'
Non-mortgage REITs are a little high now, so you would want
to do some scouring to find value ones.
I would stay away from mortgage REITs entirely for the
immediate future. Rising interest rates will (and is?) take
(taking?) a toll on them. There is plenty of commentary on
the web on this. 'course, you could try to be a
contrarian...
Googling will turn up a lot of authoritative sites on the
nature and categories of REITs.
