ETFs Vs. Mutual Funds

ETFs Vs. Mutual Funds

Can anyone provide a link to a web site that could educate me on ETFs. I
have read different articles saying that they are great and others saying
stay away.
I think I understand that they are only for indexes, or are there ones that
are actively managed? I am only interested for taxable investing.
If anyone has been investing in them, what main point won you over?

just try a google. nothing really to etf's, except you don't want them
for multiple buys or sells due to the commission. save them for
something you buy then probably much later sell, once in total. best
advantage is you can sell them any time with no restrictions or
penalties, in case it's some sector you are unsure of. or just ignore
the distinction and consider them as yet more mutual funds.

a lot of indexes have been brain dead, like the dow or sp. powershares
family of etf's has some that are a bit dynamic due to the index being
frequently updated. pws sometimes benefits from this and i wish pwo
would. there are also some unique sectors most easily targeted by
etfs.

biggest gotcha is the stupid holdrs etf family; they make it look like
you directly own the stocks contained in their etf and you are
inundated with an armload of stupid unavoidable stockholder business
mail per day from the umpteen stocks. oh, another gotcha is sometimes
a closed end fund is referred to as an etf, but that is a very
different animal which i think most should avoid.

Give a look at . It details top holdings an
ETF and performance, etc. One useful thing about the site is you can
compare NAV (net asset value) of a fund vs. its share price. Sometimes
a fund can trade on the open market with a price less/more than the
constituent value of stocks that it has in its holdings -ie- share
price is less or more than actual dollar amount of intrinsic stock
holdings' value. They call this a discount or premium, respectively,
of the fund's share price.
