Many sites appear on the web to introduce consumers to
investing in stocks and mutual funds. I suggest you spend at
least six months reading about stocks and mutual funds
before buying anything. Leave any cash you have in a money
market account paying at least 3% right now. Maybe start
with:
For newbies, I strongly recommend starting with index mutual
funds. Several articles discussion index mutual funds are
linked at:
misc.invest.financial-plan is also a good place to ask about
investing for the future as well. It is moderated, so less
junk gets posted there.
Lastly, remember the only stupid question is an unasked one.
Good luck.

I would suggest you buy and read "Bogle on Mutual Funds" Bogle.
Readable and right on.
I will say this. The stock market has gone up in the past at about 10%
per year. The reason the stock market goes up is the economy is
expanding. The economy expands because of two reasons. One is the
increasing population. The other is the increase in standard of living.
So the odds are in your favor if you invest in the stock market (and
things continue like they have in the past). You buy a piece of the
stock pie, some years later the whole pie is bigger, and so is your
share. The stock market is not a "zero sum" game, the odds are in your
favor!! What a deal!!
