I agree with Mr. Weinberger.

Does anyone have a few suggestions for investing in India?

Mutual Fund: Mathews India fund MINDX.

ETF's: IIF, IFN

IIF and IFNs are closed end funds and not ETFs.
I am eagerly waiting for an India ETF.

MINDX looks like an excellent choice, coming
from Matthews which has some very good funds
specializing in Asian segments.

Indeed, you are right. I tend to be careless about such matters,
especially because CEF's and ETF's have the same feel in day-to-day
trading.

IIF is a closed-end fund. Right now it's trading at a 15% premium to
NAV. I never buy a closed-end fund when it's trading at a premium.

Something to think about before you do. China's economy grew 50% over
the past 5 years, but the stock market *dropped* by 50%.

Why, because there are no India ETFs?

I actually got into Eaton Vance India Fund a few years ago; and despite the
load and high expense ration this fund has performed exceptionally well.
Matthews just came out with their India fund i believe in October but I may
just stick with Eaton Vance Fund for now because of their performance.

I'm not going blazing guns - will take some returns to lure me farther
in, although I haven't the timeframe yet you and others do. Foreign
markets despite their good prospects I find every bit if not more
volatile than anything else I've encountered (short of TECH, can't
offhand think of fund specialty I've haven't played). I'm broadly
exposed over Asia and it's eyeballs front and center, and that's with
no disciplined or otherwise ETF/CEFs (for awhile). MINDX is my only
token ante - plain up @$121US yrly ER vrs 2+-3+% ERs without the
addeded in/outs on Eaton's AB. As you say, groovy gravy can be awhile
simmering.

Of course there's a reason: The share price of IIF has been bid up by
momentum players and speculators who noticed the huge rise to date and
want to get in on the action.

I'm not a momentum player nor a speculator. I am a value investor, and
I won't buy things that are overpriced.

Howdy all,

For investing in India, I've chosen MINDX from Matthews. Wonderful
noload house that specializes in asia. I've been investing in their
funds for years and have been more than pleased.

I bought MINDX when it was first issued in mid-november at the issue
price of $10 NAV per share. I added to it a little later as it kept
growing. Right now it's up 19.1% since purchase. Er, I can live with
that.

However, a bit of caution should be exercised. Single country plays
are always extremely risky and this, like China, is even more so. Be
careful and keep your bets under control.

peace,

rono

Well that may be a reason but IFN and IIF are outperforming the indian indices.
So they would be better than an ETF
