convertible security fund - what are these

What are Convertible Security mutual funds ?
I read a little that seemed to imply they are actually bonds
with the right to convert into common stock -
So - why & when would a company issue them
vs a strict bond or strict stock ?
And then how does the mutual fund actually gain or
benefit from having them vs a strict bond or stock -
