They all run in cycles - it's the overall trend that concerns me. BTW it's
up over 1% since I bought today - over 9% YTD.

Most of these guys make HUGE bucks - especially bonuses on good years.
However, the sector has a 1 year return of over 44%.

Hello Jerry,
Yes. FSLBX is in the top 10 of the Fidelity Select funds YTD.
Congrats!
FWIW:
Based on the reported Mar 9 '06 EOD prices for all 42 of the Fidelity
Select funds in my database:

Time Span % Chg Rank Best Performer % Chg
--------- -------- ------- ------------
Past 1 month + 1.0 21 Biotech FBIOX + 4.2

If you want to see how all the funds rank for a variety of time
scales, take a look at:

For a detailed discussion of how to read these charts, See:
or navigate from the Fidelity page to AI Home and then to Financial

We update the Fidelity pages and the other stock price pages on our

I'll be happy to answer questions about these innovative charts.

Damn, I gotta get me some of that money market that did 29% in 6

FSLXX is quoted as percentage yield rather than price. The percentage
yield increased by 29%, from 3.30% on Sep 9 '05 to 4.26% on Mar 9 '06.

Of course the economy, all economies, run in cycles. IOT not lose
money one must be tuned in the stages of the economy. The sectors
that are peaking are typically late stage sectors. You can ignore if
you so choose or you can dress for the season.
If you were playing the overall trend, you would be concerned with one
of the indexes. Brokerages are a late stage sector.

That's really not a valid comparison to the total return of other
funds. Looks like robo-math.
Well, if you can pick the tops and bottoms of sectors, I surely can not hold
a candle to that talent. I just ride the waves - buy on up trends, sell on
down trends. I realize this sector has had a lot of gains, however there is
still a LOT of M&A activity going on and likely will continue for some time.
Thus, I'm not counting the sector out at this point. The majors will be
reporting earnings and guidance shortly. Should they surprisingly be
disappointing, I will likely move quite a bit out of the sector. BTW, I'm
not the only one that's still bullish on the sector. See the following.

Hey, I like those URL's. I invest a lot in Fidelity's sector funds. These
make it easier to review and potentially make changes.

Right. But it does give an indication of the trend in the yield. This
is like the trend in prices for the other funds in the sense that Up
is Good, and a bigger Up is better than a small one. But listing it in
my table above was a little misleading.
Here is an updated table as of Mar 10, leaving out the money market
fund:
FSLBX FSLBX
Time Span % Chg Rank Best Performer % Chg
--------- -------- ------ -------------------
Past 1 month + 2.1 13 Biotech FBIOX +4.2
YTD + 7.4 5 Envir Serv FSLEX +9.7
Past 3 months + 3.8 19 Envir Serv FSLEX +10.5
Past 6 months +17.2 4 Gold FSAGX +26.9
Past 9 months +33.5 2 Gold FSAGX +52.4
The charts are a much better way to see this information.
Cheers,

Question. Another sector that I haven't given up on is energy. FSENX shows
a 1% YTD loss on these charts. On Fidelity's site and some others that I
use indicate a YTD return of +3.55%. What am I missing?
Thanks,

Did you say "make it easier to review?" How so? Wouldn't a simple listing
suffice? All these colors still don't tell when a move has been
exhausted! ;-)

Well, my techniques are admittedly very unscientific, they equate more
closely to a trend line. For major investments, I must have a "warm"
feeling for the sector and will normally take larger down trends before
taking large investments out of the sector, but will lighten up a bit on any
down trends. A good example of this is the energy sector. Should I really
not care much for the sector, I will still buy on up trends, but bail on
small down trends. A good example of this is the gold sector. As far as
the brokerage sector, I will greatly lighten up on any sign of a down trend,
but still hold some for potential bounce backs. For sectors that I like,
but remain mainly flat for a few months I will move mostly out of it. A
good example of this is the health care sector.
Good Luck,

Thank you for the explanation, Jerry. I believe in "warm" feelings myself,
but at this time all of it appears to be overbought. That doesn't mean that
it cannot get more *overbought.* Unfortunately stocks have that tendency
to drop faster than that they tend to rise in price. Take care!

Correction, it actually shows a YTD loss of 5% - I read the wrong line.

I like having em all on one page for a quick review. One can then pick out
the best performers quickly for a more detailed review/analysis.

Right. My chart shows YTD -1% as of 3/10.
I didn't see the YTD figure on Fidelity's site. Yahoo lists the "YTD
Return" of +5.22% as of 2/28/06. My chart shows +0.6% as of that date.
Perhaps the YTD Return figure includes dividends?
The charts only use the what the web sites call the "Net Asset Value."

Yes, YTD returns includes all distributions (dividends & capital gains). I
still like your charts. They are great for a quick overview.

Excellent. It is nice to hear from someone who doesn't fall to the
MEGO (My Eyes Glaze Over) effect when he looks at the charts.
>They are great for a quick overview.
It would certainly be tedious to bring up charts for the individual
funds every day. The charts give you the quick overview of a huge
amount of information. You will see more in the charts as you watch
them over time and get used to reading them.
Naturally, they are an enhancement to, not a replacement of, more
traditional methods of analysis.
