AT&T inc stocks

I had some AT&T stocks, and now with this new
merger with SBC, I got a letter saying that the
number of shares that I had was reduced. I gave
AT&T inc. a call, and they told me that I should
multiply my old number by .77942, and should
not expect a check. I hope I talked to the right
person.

The symbol is still 'T', and the price seems about
the same as it has been for quite awhile. Are they
actually taking money away? Are they allowed to
do that?

Actually, I called someone else and found out
that they are giving a larger dividend check to
make up for this --sorry for the confusion.
