After buying a flat - What to do

After buying a flat - What to do

am 11.06.2006 12:07:05 von Jon

After saving up for a long time I'm finally buying a flat on Wednesday
Does anyone have a good web site for what you actually do after buying a
flat

Talking about things, like getting contents insurance, registering for
council tax, tv licence sorting out utilities. A web site that assumes I'm
complete newbie at living on my own (parents sorted it out before)

Would really appreciate any help

Thanks
Jon

Don't know of any websites, but here is a very incomplete list from someone
who rents rather than bought a flat.

Tell the local council tax department you live there.

Find out if you need a parking permit in your area, and apply for one if
needed.

Find a local doctor and register with them, or if your existing doctor is
nearby, tell them you have moved.

Find out if there are any NHS dentists in your area, and register with them
if possible. There aren't any NHS dentists in the county I live in, or the
neighbouring county, but you may be more lucky.

If you watch TV, get a TV licence, otherwise, draft a standard letter to TV
Licencing telling them to go away, and be prepared to send it to them
approximately every two weeks for the rest of your life.

Select an electricity supplier and sign up for an account with them. If you
don't, then the existing supplier will charge you a higher rate for a
"deemed supply".

If you have gas, do the same there, possibly with the same supplier as for
electricity so you get a dual fuel discount.

Find a landline supplier and sign up for an account with them. Do the same
for broadband if you want that. If you select BT or another supplier which
uses BT lines, and a different broadband provider, then you will have to
wait for the line to be installed and set up before you can get broadband
on it. Otherwise you should be able to do both at the same time.

If you want cable / satelite TV, sign up for that at some point.

Get contents insurance for your house. As you live in a flat, either the
freeholder or management company as appropriate should have arranged
buildings insurance, and your solicitor / licenced conveyancer should have
already checked this out.

Get mail direction from your previous address, and tell everyone who sends
you mail that you have moved.

Move in, put your feet up, watch your mortgage rise and your capital shrink.
Sorry!

Buy a couple of bottles of Port in preparation for celebrating your
mortgage-free state ;-)

This website will tell you exactly what you need to do:

It is updated roughly once a month.
